Expert Profile

Tengku Faris obtained his Phd in Stem cell Research in the United Kingdom. He is a keen researcher, specialising in disease modeling using stem cells. He interested in understanding molecular mechanism of kidney development and associated genetic diseases. His work revolved around making kidney organoids in-a-dish from reprogrammed pluripotent stem cells to recapitulate genetic kidney malformations. Upon stimulation, human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSCs) can be differentiated into nephron progenitors before forming metanephric kidney. These organoids are anticipated to contain most of the kidney cell types and can be utilised as an in vitro disease models. The CRISPR/Cas9 system can be integrated into these models to correct mutations. Although making another version of kidney that are morphologically identical and functioning could be challenging, it is not impossible. He envisioned that the research can accelerate production of biosynthetic or artificial kidney to serve as transplantation alternative.
