Prof. Dr Azmi Md Nor started housemanship training at Hospital Besar Seremban in 1988 after completing his undergraduate study at University Science Malaysia (USM), Pulau Pinang. In 1989, he served Hospital Besar Kuantan as a medical officer in Orthopaedic, ENT and General Surgery. In June 1992, he enrolled for the Master of Surgery, MS (General Surgery) with the Faculty of Medicine, University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). (General Surgery) in June 1996. He immediately returned to Kuantan to serve Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan Kuantan as a clinical specialist in General Surgery.
He developed and interest in teaching since at UKM. In Kuantan, he started getting involved in teaching of medical students of IIUM since 1998. In February 1999, he was seconded to KOM, IIUM from the Ministry of Health. He became the first Head of Hurgery, and was involved directly in the preparation of the General Surgery Curriculum for the undergraduates. Besides the administrative matters, he also serviced as a general surgeon to HTAA and was involved in research activities. He has been invited by other universities to teach their undergraduate and postgraduate students and is an examiner for both undergraduate and postgraduate examinations for both public and private universities. Currently he is an honorary lecturer at Faculty of Medicine, UniSZA.
In 2003, he departed to Australia for a clinical fellowship training with Prof. Dr Peter Hewett at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide. On his return, he developed a colorectal unit at Department of Surgery, KOM, dedicated to treating colorectal diseases. It receives referral of complex colorectal diseases from all over the country. It is also recognized and gazetted for colorectal fellowship programme under the Ministry of Health. The centre has so far trained more than ten colorectal surgeons for the country. The Department also started its Master of Surgery (General Surgery) programme in 2015. Up to now, we have more than 15 postgraduate students in the programme.
As for research and publications, Dr. Azmi has published more than 20 articles in various journals and one of his publications a??Ligation of Intersphincteric Fistula Tract (LIFT): A Sphincter-saving Techniquea?? which was published in Diseases of Colon and Rectum in 2010, has been cited 150 times. Still active in research despite his administrative commitments. Prof. Azmi has been invited as a speaker in various colorectal conferences in Malaysia and Singapore. He has also been invited as a clinical demonstrator in various meetings for endoanal ultrasound and anorectal manometry.
He retired from MOH in 2011 to become a permanent staff of IIUM. In July 2014, he assumed a new post as the Dean of the Kulliyyah of Medicine, IIUM and continues to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students.
