BACKGROUND
The Kulliyyah of Education (KOED), was established as a Department of Education on July 16, 1987. It was set up to assist in meeting Malaysia’s need for graduate teachers. It offered the Diploma of Education programme to prepare teachers to teach in secondary schools.
In May 1997, the Department began offering a limited Bachelor of Education Programme in Arabic Language and Literature for teachers from the Ministry of Education Special Diploma Programme.
Beginning 2003, the Kulliyyah began conducting a twinning programme with the Ministry of Education to upgrade the qualification and skills of in-service and pre-service teachers to Bachelor Degree in five (5) programmes – B.Ed Teaching of English as a Second Language (in-service), B.Ed Teaching of Arabic as a Second Language, B.Ed Counselling (in-service), B.Ed Moral Education (in-service), B.Ed TESL (pre-service).
As of July 2007, the Ministry of Education is again requesting all IPTAs including IIUM to help it produce graduate teachers, and KOED begins to offer four (4) B.Ed programmes for students coming through the mainstream. The four (4) B.Ed programmes, each for a duration of 4 years, are as follows:- B.Ed TESL, B.Ed TASL, B.Ed Counseling and B.Ed Islamic Education.
In July 2012, four departments were established in the Kulliyyah. They are the Department of Social Foundations and Educational Leadership, Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and the Department of Language and Literacy.
The Kulliyyah offers M.ED and Ph.D Programmes in Counseling, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Management and Leadership ,Educational Psychology, Social Foundations of Education, Instructional Technology, Teaching of Arabic to Non Arabic, Teaching of Islamic Education and Teaching Thinking. It also offers Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
PHILOSOPHY
Programmes and activities of the Kulliyyah of Education are founded on the principles contained in the philosophy of IIUM, which was inspired by the recommendations of the First World Conference on Muslim Education held in Mecca in A.H 1398 (A.D. 1977). The spirit of this philosophy is based on the Holy Qur'an, in particular the five verses revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, namely, Surah al-Alaq, verses 1 - 5. Briefly these principles are:
- All interpretations of knowledge are based on an Islamic worldview of Life, the Universe and Creation.
- The basis for interpretation of all forms of knowledge is Tawhid and its manifestation in our way of life. Knowledge, therefore, shall be propagated in the spirit of Tawhid, which stipulated that Allah is the Absolute, the Creator, the Master and Cherisher of the Universe.
- The ultimate purpose of knowledge is to lead man to the realization of his position as a servant of Allah and His Khalifah on earth, and to prepare him to fulfill these roles and be accountable to Allah with regards to his deeds and action.
- The interpretation and propagation of knowledge proceed from the recognition of "wahy" as divinely revealed which must take precedence over acquired knowledge.

To become a renowned Islamic centre for education nationally and internationally, consistent with the vision of the IIUM.
KULLIYYAH MISSION
To produce dedicated researchers, scholars, and educators to develop Islamic approaches in the construction of knowledge relevant with contemporary socio-cultural conditions.
To foster research endeavors in various fields of education which will contribute towards the development of the nation and ummah.
OBJECTIVES
The objective of the Kulliyyah of Education is to develop and refine the Islamic concept, theory, practice, and system of education which is capable of producing successive generations of Muslims who not only serve Allah faithfully and are committed to follow His guidance in all aspects of their life, but are also knowledgeable and skillful so as to bring benefits and avoid harm to themselves, mankind and the universe.
Specifically, through its programmes and activities of teaching, research and publication, the Kulliyyah of Education aims to produce all levels of professionals in education who are endowed with the following characteristics:
- Proactive, critical, creative and innovative.
- Subscribe in total submission to the command of Allah.
- Committed to follow Allah's guidance in all aspects of their lives
- Knowledgeable and skillful in applying various educational principles, techniques and technology.
- Able to carry out and are totally committed to the mission of developing and nurturing Islamic personality in their students.
MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Welcome - Selamat Datang - Ahlanwasahlan
It is my great pleasure to share with you some background information about our Kulliyyah, which is celebrating its Silver Jubilee (25th years of its establishment) this year. We have grown and developed tremendously from our humble beginning in 1987 as a teacher training institution offering a post graduate diploma in education, to a postgraduate school of education, producing teacher-educators, educational leaders and educational research, Alhamdulillah.
Almost all our academic staff are PhD holders obtaining their degrees from both Eastern and Western universities. At least ten percent of our staff are from the international community i.e. they are non-Malaysians. Our academic staff are currently engaged in numerous academic research and publication activities, as well as community service. Our professors have created their own niche areas being sought after experts in: Islamic education – curriculum and instruction; Islamic educational thought, Islamisation of acquired knowledge, integrated education, Islamic guidance and counseling, Teaching English Language as a Second Language, Teaching of Arabic Language for non-Arabic Speakers, Statistical Equation Modeling (SEM), Rasch model and the Hikmah pedagogy of philosophical inquiry.
Our Kulliyyah welcomes students from different parts of the world and presently, we have students from Southeast Asia, East Asia, the Middle East, the Balkans, Africa and the Indian sub-continent most of whom are post-graduate students. This blend of cultures has made the learning environment at KOED rich and stimulating. Moreover, our alumni have spread throughout the developing world and are now building their own reputations, as well as the reputation of the Kulliyyah, as fine university lecturers and educational managers.
At KOED, we aim to provide students with excellent teaching and learning facilities as well as encouraging them to develop their own potential – by engaging in academic and co-curricular activities that are organised through a variety of student bodies. In this way, we hope to ensure that our students will have the necessary soft skills, leadership skills, creative, critical and ethical thinking to face the challenges of their careers and life in the modern world.
As a world class educational institution, we welcome collaboration with both local and overseas institutions. To date our staff have been invited as visiting professors to universities in Japan, the USA, Syria, and the UK, with some of them obtaining research fellowships from the Japanese Foundation and the Fulbright Grant. A few have been part of the ISESCO team in Morocco, helping to coordinate social and educational programmes for the Muslim countries. In addition, we have received visiting professors and post-graduate students from the USA, Iran, Indonesia, UNESCO and Japan and look forward to cooperating and collaborating more with international staff and students through projects and exchange programmes in the future, insha’Allah.
