Applying for Postgraduate Study
The IIUM Centre for Postgraduate Studies Office is here to help you throughout the application process. We hope the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) below will help you to find answers to most queries/questions. If you can't find the answer to your question, feel free to contact us.
General Information/ Before Application
Q: What Masters/PhD programmes are on offer for this academic year?

Q: How much is the application fee? Is it refundable?
Application is not refundable. Visit our website: www.iium.edu.my/admissions for details.
Q: What about the processing fee?
Payment of the process fee/application (non-refundable) is USD100 (International) and RM100 (Malaysian). Please visit http://www.iium.edu.my/admissi...

Q: What are the admission requirements?
Our postgraduate prospectus is online here: http://www.iium.edu.my/admissi... if you follow the links for the specific Kulliyyah/Faculties, you will see the entry requirements for each programme are listed on each individual webpage.
Q: Is there an age limit for graduate programmes?
There is no age limit for our postgraduate programme in IIUM
Q: Can a Non-Muslim Malaysian apply?
Yes, we utmost welcome you.
Q: How competitive is admission to IIUM’s Masters/PhD programmes?
You are encouraged to apply early as competition for places is intense. It would be wise to apply as soon as possible as there is a rolling admission procedure and a limited number of places in the programme.
Q: How do I apply and when is the closing date?
For closing date and deadline listings go to: http://www.iium.edu.my/admissions/postgraduates. Applications are considered on a rolling admissions basis until the deadline. Any application received after the deadline will be processed for the next intake and applicants are advised to apply early.
Q: What sort of qualifications do I need to be admitted to the Masters/PhD programmes?
For Masters: A Bachelor’s Degree or its equivalent in the related field. Candidate must have at least CGPA 2.75/4.00- French Grading System and above or its equivalent.
For PhD:A Master’s degree or its equivalent in the related field.
Q: What supporting documents am I likely to be asked for?
- A complete application package should consist of the following items:
- A complete application form.
- Passport sized photographs of the applicant.
- Certified True Copy:
- Passport (Include all stamped pages and the validity date of the passport).
- Bachelor Degree and Transcript (compulsory to all Postgraduate applicants).
- Master Degree and Transcript (applicable to application for PhD Programme).
- Evidence of English Proficiency (TOEFL/IELTS)
- Reports of two (2) academic referees.
- Recommendation letter from an Islamic organization, community leader or imam (preferable an IIUM representative) in the applicant’s country of residence.
- Financial Statement i.e. Documentary evidence of the applicant’s ability to cover tuition, accommodation, food, medical and other expenses for the total duration of the programme.
- Preliminary Research Proposal (applicable to application for Master’s (by research) and all PhDs programme.
Q: Can I pursue these Masters/PhD programmes on a part-time basis?
If you are a local (Malaysian) candidate you can pursue your programme on part time but if you are international candidate you must possess valid working permit to study on part time basis.
Q: Can I continue in paid employment while taking a full-time Masters/PhD degree programme?
No.
Q: Can I live outside of the Malaysia while studying for my PhD?
No.
Q: Can I pursue the IIUM Masters/PhD programmes through distance learning?
IIUM does not offer programme through distance learning.
While Applying
Q: Is there anything extra that former IIUM students should submit with their application?
A: We would request that all former IIUM students include in their applications a full transcript of their grades for all courses taken throughout their current or previous IIUM degrees.
Q: As a Malaysian student, who will not receive any formal certificate of graduation from undergraduate degree until late September? How can I submit my documentation to obtain a firm offer of a place on the M.Sc. programme?
A: We would like you to submit along with your application, the partial transcript from your University to obtain our conditional offer which is subject to the Kulliyyah/Faculty approval.
Q: I am not a native English speaker, but I studied for my degree at an English-speaking institution. Do I need to take an English proficiency test?
A: Yes, you are required to provide evidence of having attained the minimum score of the test of English as foreign language (TOEFL) or of international English language testing service (IELTS) with minimum required score. Please visit: http://www2.iium.edu.my/cps/language_requirements
Q: What are the English language requirements for the students who do not speak English as their first language?
A: Regarding English language requirements, the programme follows the standardized requirements set by the Centre for Postgraduate Studies Office and specified on the website: http://www2.iium.edu.my/cps/language_requirements. There is no flexibility on the language requirements. Students who do not fulfill the minimum language requirements will have to enroll up to two years period for language courses at the Centre for languages, IIUM. In cases circumstances, language scores can be submitted after submission of the rest of the application. Applicants who are allowed to submit their scores if not yet obtained at the time of application.
Q:When supplying references, do they have to be from academic referees?
A: Academic references are preferable, but where these are not available professional references are acceptable also.
Q: What other expenses, above and beyond fees, should I expect as a student living in Malaysia?
A: The International Office as IIUM has created an estimate of living expenses for students living in Malaysia. Please visit the www.iium.edu.my/iad or visit http://educationmalaysia.gov.my/index.php/living-in-malaysia.html.
Of course, the cost of living will vary depending on the student's lifestyle and living standards.
