e-mail address: eldcelpad@iium.edu.my

The English Language Division (ELD) caters for a broad range of students including those who have received their education in a medium other than English as well as those who have experienced varying degrees of English medium instruction. The programme looks into the needs of the local and foreign students at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

Quranic Language Division

e-mail address: qld_celpad@iium.edu.my

When IIUM first opened its doors in 1983, one of the major divisions of CELPAD was the Quranic Language Division (QLD). QLD is home to a diverse group of students interested in continuing their education at IIUM in all Kulliyyahs. Those who have never studied Arabic and those who have received their education entirely or partially in Arabic are included. QLD's courses cater to the needs of both local and international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Tilawah Division

e-mail address: tilawahcelpad@iium.edu.my

Tilawah Division which was formally known as Tilawah Unit was established in 1987 when the senate endorsed the proposal presented to start the unit within the Language Centre. The establishment of the division is in line with the Islamization of Knowledge as a mission and vision of the International Islamic University Malaysia.

The objectives of the Division are:

  1. To produce students who can recite the Holy Quran in a correct way based on the tajwid discipline. This is to ensure that students attain an acceptable reading standard as the recitation of the Holy Prophet PBUH transmitted by Hafs `An `Asim.
  2. To produce students who can memorize surahs from Holy Al-Qurans for the daily ibadah which are needed for prayers or to become an imam in solat.
  3. To produce graduates who are able to recite the Holy Quran correctly and smoothly based on the rules of tajwid.

Tilawah Placement Test:

All new students are required to sit for the Tilawah Placement Test (TPT) before following the Tilawah courses. The TPT is regularly conducted at the beginning of each semester. From the TPT, students are placed at either level 1 (TQ 1001), level 2 (TQ 2001) or are given exemption.

From the Tilawah courses, students are guided through a process of learning and practicing the rules of tajwid in the recitation of the Holy Quran through the student centered approach. Thus, students are assisted in developing their proficiency on reading the Holy Quran through the following learning strategies: imitating, practicing and memorizing. To sum up, students will learn the rules of tajwid in detail from the explanation of the instructors. They are expected to be able to apply those rules in recitation naturally.

Bahasa Melayu Division

e-mail address: dbm@iium.edu.my

The Bahasa Melayu Division caters for both Malaysian and International students of IIUM. All students in IIUM are required to take Bahasa Melayu as prescribed in the course outlines for each Kulliyyah. Generally, the aims of the Bahasa Melayu courses are as follows:

  • To instill among students an awareness of the importance of Bahasa Melayu
  • To be able to use appropriate Bahasa Melayu as is officially spoken and written among the Malaysians.
  • To ensure students have the knowledge pertaining to the history and usage of Bahasa Melayu
  • Comparatively, the use of Bahasa Melayu for foreign students is relatively lower in level. Malaysians students, however, are required to master the appropriate language registers in spoken and written Bahasa Melayu in accordance with the various disciplines.

Bridging Programme

The Bridging programme was established in 2007 to cater to students who come from a system with insufficient academic depth to follow the undergraduate programmes at IIUM (ie. students with certificates that are not equivalent to A-levels but higher than O-levels). The Bridging programme offers foundation courses for students who intend to enroll into science-based kulliyyahs (eg. Engineering, Information Technology and Architecture).
