About CUTe

The Centre of Unmanned Technology (CUTe) is designed to advance the scientific study and development through human-robot collaboration. The main function of this centre is to bridge the gap between researchers, industries and communities by developing technologies that nurture the next generation of scientists and engineers towards humanizing innovations. The partnership results in an exceptional center for research and training. 

Through the integration of education and research, CUTe is unique amongst other centres in that: 

  1. it involves the partnership between researchers, industries and communities; 
  2. the innovations from the researches provides actual solutions to the society; and 
  3. it exists to exploit multi- and inter- disciplinary knowledge to produce high quality human capital. 

For the past 5 years, we have successfully collaborated with 23 partners from industries and other associations, obtained approximately RM2.5 million research grants and consultancy projects, produced 156 journals and publications, accomplished the transfer of knowledge through IIUM Roboteam programs, and produced high quality innovations that are applicable and usable by the people. CUTe is in line with the 9th sustainable development goals (SDG9) which is building resilient infrastructure and promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization.

CUTe Objectives

  1. To work with collaborating partners to solve problems of primary importance to the human-robot operations.
  2. To provide researchers with the world class multi-disciplinary knowledge that will allow them to become the next generation of technical leaders with life-long learning passion.
  3. To conduct a research projects pertaining to humanity, security, safety and sustainability.
  4. "To make sure the research does not stay in the labs and papers."

CUTe SMART Focus Area


(S)urface Vessel

Focuses on the research and development of unmanned surface vessel (USV) capable of performing autonomous operations under long endurance missions in hostile’s maritime and inland environments whose operations include search and rescue, maritime patrol and surveillance, environmental monitoring and underwater mapping.

(M)edical Rehabilitation

Focuses on the research and application of engineering technologies fused with data-driven machine learning to develop assistive technology products that enhance the independence, health, productivity, and quality of life of people with physical disabilities.

(A)erial Vehicle

Focuses on the research and development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV-drones) capable of flying with or without GPS, through mapped or unmapped outdoor environments with various degrees of autonomy.

(R)obotics Design 

Focuses on the research and development of the science of autonomy in robotics with integrated artificial intelligence systems capable of performing autonomous operations, either individually or collaboratively, with minimal knowledge of the world.

(T)ransfer of Technology

Focuses on the sharing of skills, knowledge, research findings, and facilities among universities, industries, and community to ensure the scientific and technological developments can be benefited by the potential users who will further develop and exploit the technology into new products or applications.
