KUALA LUMPUR: Students of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) have taken and signed the Corruption-Free Pledge (IBR), making them the first public institution of learning (IPTA) students to do so.

The pledge-taking ceremony took place during the Anti-Corruption Students Convention (Komawar) here last night and was led by IIUM Student Representative Council (MPP) president Amir Ridwan Idris.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad and IIUM Rector Prof Datuk Seri Dr Zaleha Kamarudin witnessed the ceremony.

In her speech, Zaleha said the culture of combating corruption should be nurtured among students, such as in the university, to prevent corruption offences from being rampant.

"This IBR demonstrates the commitment of IIUM students to combat and avoid all forms of corrupt practices," she said.

Meanwhile, Dzulkifli said today's students would one day become the country's leaders and therefore, must ensure that the country would be free from corruption.

"Students are very close to my heart and they play a very important role. I hope you all will be together with the MACC to reject corruption," he said.

Also launched at the convention was the Anti-Corruption Student Movement (Gema), a programme that promotes anti-corruption campaigns to inject awareness on the need for students to avoid corruption. — Bernama
